The Problem Space
Many designers struggle with creative rigidity, an emotional attachment to ideas, fear of failure, and deep discomfort with ambiguity. These patterns often stem from a core need for control and certainty, not a lack of creativity.
While most creative tools celebrate freeform exploration, few are built for people who need structure, validation, and psychological safety to take creative risks. This gap is where ReRoot begins.

Design Foundation
The app is grounded in user research and behavioural insights gathered from interviews with both explorative and rigid-minded creatives. Emotional mapping and affinity synthesis revealed that rigid creatives thrive under specific conditions.
Low-stakes risk : Exploration feels safe when mistakes feel reversible and non-threatening.
Purposeful framing : Ambiguity becomes approachable when exploration has a clear intention behind it.
Emotionally safe feedback : Timely, gentle feedback encourages risk-taking rather than triggering withdrawal.
Emotional progress tracking : Users need to see emotional growth, not just output, feeling the change matters.
The ReRoot Experience
ReRoot is a gamified self-reflection app that helps users monitor and shift their creative confidence over time. Its central mechanic is a digital plant or pet companion that visually mirrors the user's emotional state, thriving when confidence is high, wilting when doubt sets in.
This living metaphor makes the invisible visible: emotional state becomes something you can tend to, not just endure.
Check In : Rate confidence before each project stage. The companion reacts in real time.
Reflect : Journal experiences after each stage. Doubt Cards reframe fear as learning.
Grow : A visual Growth Timeline tracks emotional shifts and companion health over time.
Key Features :
Welcome & Companion Selection : Users begin by choosing a nature-themed digital companion, establishing an emotional connection from the very first interaction and grounding the experience in care.
Confidence Check-ins : Before each project stage, users rate their confidence level. The companion responds in real time, visualising progress or hesitation as a living emotional mirror.
Creative Project Setup : Users define their own project milestones, Ideation, Feedback, Submission, and more, tailoring the app to their actual workflow rather than a generic framework.
Growth Rituals & Doubt Cards : Personalised prompts nudge users to reflect, seek feedback, or take small risks. When confidence dips, supportive Doubt Cards appear to reframe fear as an opportunity for learning.
Reflection & Growth Timeline : After each stage, users journal their experience. A visual Growth Timeline maps emotional shifts and companion health over time, making inner progress tangible and rewarding.

What Guided The Design
Structure as safety : Every feature is scaffolded, giving rigid creatives enough predictability to feel confident taking risks.
Emotion as data : Feelings are treated as meaningful signals, not noise, tracked, visualised, and made actionable.
Growth over output : Success is measured by emotional shifts and self-awareness, not deliverables or productivity.
Gentle friction : The app nudges rather than pushes, creating just enough discomfort to spark growth, never enough to trigger withdrawal.
"ReRoot taught me that designing for emotional behaviour requires more than empathy, it demands structure that feels safe and deeply personal. This project helped me integrate UI/UX design with emotional psychology, creating a tool that feels both introspective and actionable."
The biggest shift this project brought was understanding that emotional design isn't decoration, it's architecture. The way an interface holds space for doubt, uncertainty, and small wins is just as important as the visual system it wraps them in.
